The imminent convening of the United Nations Security Council underscores the escalating tensions between Somalia and Ethiopia, centering around a contentious port agreement involving the self-declared republic of Somaliland.

According to reports from Somali state TV, SNTV, the scheduled Monday meeting is poised to delve into the “concerning events in the Horn of Africa,” signifying the gravity of the situation.

The crux of the dispute stems from Ethiopia’s recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Somaliland, a move that has ignited a diplomatic firestorm.

This agreement holds significant implications as it grants landlocked Ethiopia strategic access to a seaport, serving both military and commercial interests.

Complicating matters further, Somalia adamantly regards Somaliland as an integral part of its territory, vehemently rejecting the accord and accusing Ethiopia of encroaching upon its sovereignty.

The dispute not only underscores regional complexities but also poses a challenge to diplomatic norms and underscores the intricacies of geopolitical relations in the Horn of Africa.
