Turkey is set to establish a rocket launch facility in Somalia, a move that will enhance Ankara’s long-range rocket testing capabilities while creating jobs and revenue for the East African nation.

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced the project during an event in Mogadishu, emphasizing its potential to transform the country’s economic and strategic landscape.

Somalia’s location at the eastern tip of Africa, with unobstructed access to the Indian Ocean, offers an ideal launch site, minimizing risks of debris falling into residential areas or neighboring countries.

This strategic advantage aligns with Turkey’s ambition to compete in a space race historically dominated by global powers.

Although President Mohamud did not reveal the project’s specific location, he underscored its significance. “I personally believe that the importance of Somalia hosting a launchpad for Turkish satellites is even more significant than the billions of dollars and opportunities that the project will generate,” he said.

Turkey has steadily expanded its presence in Somalia over the past decade, leveraging defense cooperation, infrastructure projects, and plans for hydrocarbon exploration. The nation is also involved in mediating disputes between the Somali government in Mogadishu and leaders in Somaliland, a semi-autonomous region.

This partnership marks another milestone in Turkey’s efforts to establish itself as a key player in Africa while advancing its space exploration goals.
