Interim Super Eagles B coach, Daniel Ogunmodede remains optimistic about Nigeria’s chances of securing a spot in the 2024 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) after a goalless draw against Ghana in the first leg of their final qualifying match on Sunday.

The first leg, held at the Accra Sports Stadium, leaves the tie delicately balanced. The second leg is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Saturday December 28th, where Nigeria must win outright to advance to the CHAN tournament, which will be co-hosted by Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda from February 1 to 28, 2025.

Speaking after the first leg, Ogunmodede expressed confidence in his team’s ability to deliver in Uyo. “This is Nigeria we are talking about. We understand how significant this is for our local players, our league, and the federation,” Ogunmodede said. “It’s important for young players and coaches to see progress. Qualifying will enhance the credibility of our league and our players abroad. We want to prove a point and complement the efforts of the administrators.”

Team captain, Junior Nduka, who plays for Remo Stars, also emphasized the importance of the match. “The future lies in our hands. We need to qualify. We will come out in full force, and we understand the importance of defending well,” Nduka stated. “We know what’s at stake, and there is no room for compromise.”

To secure a spot in the tournament, Nigeria must defeat Ghana in open play during the second leg. A score draw would favor the Ghanaians due to the away goals rule, while another goalless draw would push the match into extra time and potentially penalties.

The home-based Super Eagles, under the guidance of Ogunmodede and Rangers International coach Fidelis Ilechukwu, aim to reach the CHAN tournament for the first time in six years. The team returned to Nigeria on Monday and will continue their preparations in Uyo.

Nigeria has come close to CHAN glory in the past, finishing third in the 2014 edition in South Africa and as runners-up to hosts Morocco in 2018. The upcoming second leg offers a chance to rewrite history and secure their place in the prestigious tournament
