Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud held high-level talks on Wednesday at the State House in Asmara, focusing on strengthening bilateral relations and addressing pressing regional and international concerns.
According to a statement from the Eritrean Foreign Ministry, both leaders emphasized that Somalia’s stability is crucial for lasting peace across the Horn of Africa.
“Securing and guaranteeing Somalia’s stability is pivotal for enduring regional peace and stability. In this respect, the two leaders discussed, in greater depth, salient agendas that promote achievement of the desired objective,” the statement read.
This meeting follows an earlier trilateral summit in October involving Egypt, Eritrea, and Somalia, where leaders signed agreements on defense, security, and political cooperation. The summit came amid rising tensions sparked by Ethiopia’s controversial January agreement with Somaliland, which sought to grant Ethiopia access to the Red Sea.
The recent discussions between Presidents Afwerki and Mohamud reaffirm the commitment of both nations to regional peace, cooperation, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa.
