Nigeria has restated its commitment to fostering peace, stability, and regional cooperation in West Africa while addressing recent remarks made by Abdourahman Tchiani, President of Niger’s National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland.
In an official statement, Yusuf Tuggar, Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that dialogue remains the cornerstone for achieving lasting solutions.
He assured that Nigeria would not undertake any actions that could undermine Niger’s sovereignty or security.
“As brothers and neighbours, Nigeria and Niger share deep historical and cultural ties, underscored by trade and economic interdependence.
These enduring connections remind us of our intrinsically linked destinies, and any unfounded allegations risk creating unnecessary tensions that could harm our collective progress,” the statement read.
Nigeria reiterated its respect for Niger’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, aligning with the principles of ECOWAS. The statement also extended an invitation to Niger’s leadership for open and constructive dialogue to address shared concerns.
Furthermore, Nigeria expressed readiness to implement confidence-building measures, including collaborative efforts to address humanitarian challenges affecting border communities.
The country also urged regional and international partners to focus on initiatives that promote reconciliation and stability, rather than actions that could exacerbate existing divisions.
