Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni, has announced he is leaving X, following a series of controversial posts, including a threat to behead opposition leader Bobi Wine. The 50-year-old army general, increasingly active in politics, has breached military protocols, fueling speculation about his ambitions to succeed his father, who has been in power since 1986.

In his final post on Friday, Kainerugaba stated he would focus on military duties but promised to reconnect with his followers in the future. This marks the second time Kainerugaba has deactivated his X account, having previously done so in 2022 before returning days later.

His posts have sparked outrage, especially his comments on topics considered off-limits for a serving soldier, including discussing a potential invasion of Kenya, which prompted his father’s apology. The recent tweet threatening Bobi Wine, which Kainerugaba later claimed was a joke, led to widespread condemnation.

Despite the backlash, the Ugandan government downplayed the post, with a spokesperson calling it a “casual remark” and clarifying it did not reflect official policy. Kainerugaba’s previous controversial posts, including support for Russia in the Ukraine invasion and siding with Tigray in the Ethiopian civil war, have also angered international observers.
