UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed Concludes Two-Day Visit to Nigeria

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, has completed a successful two-day visit to Nigeria, from January 9 to January 10, 2025, where she held high-level discussions with key government officials and advocated for development, regional stability, and climate action.

During her visit, Ms Mohammed met with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Finance Minister Wale Edun, Minister of Humanitarian Affairs Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, ECOWAS President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, and other senior government representatives. She also engaged with the UN Country Team led by Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Mohamed Malick Fall.

Accompanied by UNOWAS Special Representative Leonardo Simão, Ms Mohammed emphasized the importance of regional integration, climate action, and food security. She underscored the role of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) in enhancing Nigeria’s economic prospects and highlighted the need for robust Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in addressing climate change.

Additionally, she reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s development goals through the UN-Nigeria Cooperation Framework (2023-2027), with a focus on ensuring inclusive progress and sustainable development for all.
