World record holder Ruth Chepngetich has announced that she will compete in the London Marathon in April, where she hopes to set a new record.

Chepngetich, who became the first woman to run under 2 hours and 10 minutes with a winning time of 2:09:56 in Chicago, will face stiff competition from fellow Kenyan Peres Jepchirchir and Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands.

The London Marathon, scheduled for April 27, features a separate elite women’s race, and Chepngetich believes the strong field could lead to a new world record.

“Myself, Peres, and the other women are strong, so it will be a competitive one,” she said. “With the strength of the field, I think we can support each other, and maybe the world record will fall.”
