Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, the daughter of former South African President Jacob Zuma, is set to appear in court on Thursday to face charges related to the 2021 riots that left over 300 people dead.
Zuma-Sambudla, a senior member of her father’s party uMkhonto WeSizwe (MK), has been accused of sharing incendiary social media posts that fueled the civil unrest.
The riots, which began in Durban and spread to Gauteng, were sparked by Zuma’s jailing for contempt of court after he refused to testify before a panel investigating corruption under his presidency.
Zuma-Sambudla will face charges of inciting terrorism, which carries serious penalties under South African law.
The MK party has urged supporters to attend the court hearing in large numbers, while Zuma-Sambudla has remained defiant, posting a cryptic message on social media that reads: “We see you”.
This is not the first time Zuma-Sambudla has been linked to the 2021 riots, which are considered one of the bloodiest episodes in post-apartheid South Africa.
