A chaotic scene unfolded in the Ghanaian Parliament on Thursday evening, resulting in a two-week suspension for four lawmakers.

The incident occurred during a ministerial vetting session, where tensions flared between lawmakers from the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The conflict began when NDC lawmakers accused their NPP counterparts of deliberately obstructing the proceedings by asking lengthy questions.

This led to a heated argument, which eventually escalated into violence, with furniture destroyed and committee members engaging in physical confrontations.

The suspension was handed down by Speaker Alban Bagbin, who sought to restore order in the parliamentary chamber.

The incident highlights the deep-seated tensions between the two major political parties in Ghana, which often boil over into violent confrontations.

In a separate development, Speaker Bagbin had previously declared four parliamentary seats vacant due to lawmakers switching parties, but this decision was suspended by the Supreme Court
