A supporter of Ghana’s Asante Kotoko football club, Francis Yaw Frimpong, also known as Pooley, was fatally stabbed during a match against Nsoatreman in the town of Nsoatre.
The incident occurred following a heated argument with an unidentified individual, according to Nsoatreman’s statement.
The violence marred the entire match, with fans throwing objects onto the pitch and some spectators storming the field to attack players and officials.
Asante Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, was assaulted during the chaos. Despite a brief halt, the match resumed, with Nsoatreman winning 1-0.
Both teams have condemned the clashes, with Nsoatreman stating, “The game of football is not a war.” The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has taken swift action, banning Nsoatreman from using their home venue until further notice and postponing the next round of league matches.
Tributes have poured in for Pooley, a passionate Asante Kotoko fan who frequently discussed his team on the radio. His death has sparked widespread outrage and concern about the persistent issue of violence at football matches in Ghana.
