Libya’s Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity, Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, met with the Deputy Commander of the US Military Forces in Africa (AFRICOM), John Brennan, to explore ways to strengthen military cooperation between the two nations.

The meeting, held in Tripoli, was attended by key Libyan officials, including Chief of Staff Mohammed Al-Haddad, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Defence Abdul Salam Al-Zoubi, National Security Advisor Ibrahim Dbaiba, and US Embassy Charge d’Affaires Jeremy Brent, as stated by the official Libyan government platform.

Discussions centered on enhancing military collaboration, advancing training programs, and improving the efficiency of Libya’s forces. Officials also addressed regional security challenges, particularly counterterrorism efforts, organized crime, and mechanisms for joint coordination to tackle threats in the region.

Dbeibeh emphasized Libya’s commitment to ongoing military cooperation with the US and highlighted the importance of leveraging international expertise to strengthen Libya’s military institutions for national security and stability.

Brennan reaffirmed the United States’ dedication to supporting Libya’s security capacity-building initiatives and enhancing bilateral coordination on shared security concerns.

The talks come as Libya continues to work toward holding elections to resolve the ongoing political divide between the Tripoli-based Government of National Unity, led by Dbeibeh, and the eastern-based administration under Osama Hamad, which operates out of Benghazi.
