The United Nations has accused Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of obstructing humanitarian aid to the war-ravaged Darfur region, where famine threatens millions.

RSF, which has been engaged in conflict with Sudan’s regular army since April 2023, controls much of Darfur and has reportedly imposed severe restrictions on aid deliveries. UN Humanitarian Coordinator Clementine Nkweta-Salami condemned the blockade, calling it “unacceptable” and urging immediate access for relief efforts.

With famine already declared in parts of North Darfur and expected to worsen, nearly seven million people in the region face acute hunger. The broader Sudanese crisis has led to over 12 million displacements and one of the world’s largest humanitarian disasters, with nearly 25 million people suffering from food insecurity.

The UN has called for an end to bureaucratic hurdles and interference, warning that continued obstruction could lead to further catastrophe.
