Reigning African champion, Anuoluwapo Opeyori has declared his readiness to defend his men’s singles title and help Nigeria reclaim gold in the team event as the 2025 African Badminton Championships gain momentum in Douala, Cameroon.

The 27-year-old star has dominated the men’s singles category, securing his first title in 2019 and winning three consecutive championships from 2022 to 2024. As the most experienced player in Nigeria’s 10-man squad, Opeyori faces stiff competition but remains confident in his ability to triumph.

Kicking off his campaign on Monday, Opeyori secured a solid victory over Zambia’s Kalombo Mulenga (13-12, 21-10, 21-12), setting the tone for Nigeria’s strong start in the tournament.

“My preparation was well executed, and I am now ready for the games ahead. I know the competition will be tough, and I am determined to defend my title,” Opeyori told Badminton Africa TV.

Beyond his individual ambitions, Nigeria’s Paris Olympics team captain is also focused on reclaiming the team event gold, a title last won by the country in 2019 when they hosted the competition.

“We have trained very hard as a team because this time, we want to fight for the gold medal in the team event as well. This will be a great experience for my team and me. We know that several teams are strong and well-balanced, but we are ready to give everyone a good fight,” Opeyori stated.

Nigeria has been drawn in Group C alongside 2024 runners-up Mauritius, Zambia, and Equatorial Guinea. Defending champions Egypt secured the last edition’s title after edging Mauritius 2-1 in a tense final in South Africa.

Adding to its significance, the 2025 African Badminton Championships also serve as the qualification tournament for the prestigious Sudirman Cup Finals, one of the world’s top mixed-team events.

The tournament runs until February 16, with Nigeria aiming for both individual and team glory on the continental stage.
