South African Police Pursue Suspects in Imam Muhsin Hendricks’ Killing

South African police are actively pursuing those responsible for the fatal shooting of Imam Muhsin Hendricks, known as the world’s first openly gay imam.

Deputy Justice Minister Andries Nel stated that authorities are “hot on the heels” of the suspects involved in the killing, which took place in broad daylight on Saturday in Gqeberha.

Hendricks, 57, was shot while inside his car when a hooded assailant emerged from a pick-up truck blocking his vehicle and fired through the window.

The shocking attack was captured on CCTV, sparking outrage across the LGBTQ+ community and beyond.

Authorities have launched an investigation but have not yet determined whether the killing was a hate crime.

Deputy Police Minister Polly Boshielo confirmed that officers are tracking the suspected perpetrators, though further details have not been disclosed.
