The Lagos State Police Command has denied any involvement in the altercation that occurred inside the Lagos House of Assembly chamber on February 17.

Speaking on Tuesday, Moshood Jimoh, the state’s commissioner of police, clarified that officers were deployed only to maintain security around the legislative complex and did not enter the hallowed chamber.

The incident took place amid speculation over the potential resignation of Mojisola Meranda, the newly elected speaker. On Monday, security operatives had sealed off her office, prompting concerns about interference in legislative affairs.

Eyewitness reports indicated that assembly staff were seen shouting at security personnel, urging them to leave the chamber. However, Jimoh maintained that the police only operated within their jurisdiction and did not disrupt legislative proceedings.

“Our officers have always provided security at the legislature within the ambit of the law,” Jimoh said. “We do not have any business inside the hallowed chamber, which is why our men remained outside.”

Jimoh assured that officers would continue to ensure security at the legislative complex while adhering to legal boundaries.

Meranda, who became Lagos’ first female speaker on January 13 after Mudashiru Obasa was removed from office, has yet to comment on the incident. Obasa was reportedly out of the country at the time of his removal.
