Anger and frustration boiled over in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, on Monday morning as students of the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA) took to the streets, demanding justice for their slain colleague, Saidu Abdulkadir.

The 25-year-old, a 400-level Agricultural Extension student, was allegedly shot by a member of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) on Sunday.

Chanting slogans and carrying placards, the protesters condemned what they described as recurring extrajudicial killings by the CJTF in the area.

Some students expressed skepticism over the university’s assurances after the Vice-Chancellor met with them on Sunday, promising accountability.

Abdulkadir was reportedly shot after he and a commercial motorcycle rider, Abubakar Yusuf, 40, were stopped by four CJTF personnel in a Hilux vehicle.

When they allegedly failed to comply, one of the operatives opened fire, hitting Abdulkadir in the thigh and hips. Both victims were rushed to the hospital, but Abdulkadir later succumbed to his injuries.

With tensions rising, students insist that authorities must act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to justice and end what they call a pattern of violence by the CJTF.
