Lagos Island witnessed a remarkable milestone yesterday as the Lagos Island Book Club (LIBC) 1.0 held its inaugural meeting, marking the first-of-its-kind literary initiative in the community.
This historic event aimed to promote a vibrant reading culture, intellectual engagement, and knowledge-sharing among Lagosians.
The book club, convened by Hon. Mohammed Abdulrasaq Akanni, Representative of Lagos Island Constituency 2 in the Lagos State Youth Parliament, and Hon. Sherifat Umar, Representative of Lagos Island Constituency 1, brought together book enthusiasts and critical thinkers from across the Island. It provided a much-needed platform for literary exploration, meaningful discourse, and the exchange of transformative ideas.
The importance of book clubs in community development cannot be overstated. In an era where digital distractions are rampant, book clubs serve as safe havens for intellectual growth, critical thinking, and informed discussions. Lagos Island, known for its rich cultural and historical heritage, is now at the forefront of fostering literary excellence and intellectual empowerment through this initiative.
The success of the inaugural meeting was largely made possible by the unwavering support of key figures. Special recognition goes to Hon. Suleiman Olanrewaju Afinni, Representative of Lagos Island Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly, who doubles as the principal sponsor of the book club. His generosity, belief in education, and continuous guidance played a crucial role in the actualization of this vision.
The book club also received institutional backing from the Executive Chairman of Lagos Island East LCDA, Hon. Muibi Alade Folawiyo who graciously approved the Lagos Island Library as the official venue for the club’s monthly meetings. The facilitation efforts of his SA on Education, Hon. Ope Kolawole, were instrumental in securing this important space.
Also special Hon. Dr. Princess Lara Oyekan-Olumegbon, Representative of Lagos Island Constituency 2 in the Lagos State House of Assembly for her unwavering support anf commitment to this program and Hon. Prince Muhammed Rosul Eshilokun, Vice Chairman of Lagos Island Local Government. For his support the initiative.
Despite the anticipation of book donations from partners, the organizers personally purchased books for the members to ensure the event proceeded as planned. This demonstrated a strong commitment to literacy advocacy, reinforcing the idea that communities must take ownership of their intellectual growth rather than waiting for external support.
With an impressive turnout and an engaging first session, the next book club meeting is scheduled for March 29, 2025. Members are eager to reconvene and dive into deeper literary discussions.
