India and Mauritius have strengthened their diplomatic and strategic ties, a move widely viewed as India’s effort to bolster its influence in the Indian Ocean amid China’s growing presence in the region.
The announcement came during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day visit to Mauritius, where he participated as the chief guest at the nation’s 57th National Day celebrations.
During his visit, Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam declared an upgrade of bilateral ties to an “enhanced strategic partnership.” Both leaders emphasized their commitment to maintaining a “free, safe, secure, and open Indian Ocean,” a critical passage for global maritime trade.
In recognition of the strengthened relationship, Mauritius honored Modi with its highest civilian award. The leaders also signed eight agreements aimed at expanding cooperation in sectors such as maritime security and infrastructure development.
Modi announced India’s investment of approximately $11 million in community development projects and pledged support for constructing a new parliament building in Mauritius, describing it as a gift from “the mother of democracy.”
