President Bola Tinubu welcomed Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama to the State House in Abuja on Thursday afternoon for high-level discussions aimed at strengthening diplomatic and economic ties between the two nations.

This marks Mahama’s first official visit to Nigeria since his inauguration on January 7, 2025.

The closed-door meeting, which began shortly after Mahama’s arrival at 2:30 PM, is expected to focus on key regional issues, including trade partnerships, cross-border security collaboration, and economic development initiatives under the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Strengthening Regional Ties

The two leaders previously met in December 2024, shortly after Mahama’s election victory, where Tinubu expressed optimism that Ghana’s leadership would contribute to stability in West Africa. Today’s talks are seen as a continuation of those discussions, with both nations seeking to deepen cooperation amid growing economic and security challenges in the region.

A statement from the Nigerian presidency highlighted the importance of the meeting, noting that Nigeria and Ghana—Africa’s two largest economies in West Africa—play pivotal roles in shaping ECOWAS policies.
