In a significant development for Lagos’ infrastructure, Minister of Works, David Umahi, has officially reopened the Independence Bridge, a vital link in the city’s road network. The reopening of the bridge comes after several months of temporary closure due to repairs and maintenance work aimed at ensuring the safety and durability of the structure.

During a press briefing in Lagos on Friday, Umahi expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the preliminary works and assured the public that permanent repairs would commence in the next three weeks. The bridge, which has long been a key route for commuters in the state, had been temporarily closed to facilitate necessary repairs, leading to traffic congestion and disruptions. The government had promised that the bridge would be reopened once initial assessments and minor fixes were completed, and this promise has now been fulfilled.

Umahi emphasized that the upcoming permanent repairs would focus on addressing the long-term structural integrity of the bridge, ensuring that it can serve the growing transportation demands of Lagos residents. The minister added that these repairs would be done with minimal disruption to the daily flow of traffic, stressing that the government was committed to completing the work efficiently to reduce any inconvenience for Lagosians.

The reopening of the Independence Bridge comes as part of a broader initiative by the federal government to improve critical infrastructure across the country. With the Lagos State government and the Ministry of Works working in tandem, this effort aims to enhance the city’s transport infrastructure and alleviate the traffic bottlenecks that have long plagued the nation’s commercial hub.
