Mali U-17 continued their strong start to the 2025 TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 victory over Central African Republic on Friday in Berrechid, moving to the top of Group D.

After their opening win against Angola, Mali made it two wins from two, securing their spot in the knockout stages. On the other hand, Central African Republic, having lost both their matches, are now eliminated from the semi-final race.

The win also guaranteed Mali a place in the 2025 U-17 World Cup in Qatar, scheduled from November 3 to 27, featuring 48 nations.

Mali broke the deadlock in the 21st minute after consistent pressure, with Soumaila Fané scoring from close range following a corner. The goal was a result of Mali’s early dominance, with Ndjicoura Bomba playing a pivotal role in the buildup.

The Central African Republic’s task became even harder when they were reduced to 10 men just before half-time. Defender Nelson Amadi was sent off after a VAR review for a dangerous foul in the 44th minute.

Mali took advantage of the numerical advantage immediately after the restart. Just a minute into the second half, Bomba headed in Mali’s second goal from Fané’s cross, making it 2-0 and effectively sealing the win.

Despite some spirited attempts from the Central African Republic, including a few saves from the Malian goalkeeper, they struggled to take advantage of their opponents’ reduced numbers. Matters worsened for them when Chrispin Ngombe received a second red card in the 64th minute, further extinguishing any hopes of a comeback.

Mali will face Cote d’Ivoire in their final group match on Monday, needing only a draw to top the group. Meanwhile, the Central African Republic will look to salvage pride when they face Angola.

With two wins in their opening matches, Mali has secured a top-two finish in Group D, guaranteeing a spot in the knockout stages. All four group winners and runners-up will secure automatic qualification for the U-17 World Cup, while the third-place teams will enter a play-off to determine CAF’s final two representatives.
