The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) over its ban on Eedris Abdulkareem’s song “Tell Your Papa,” which allegedly criticizes President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies.

The NBC had prohibited the song from radio and TV broadcasts, citing its “objectionable nature” and violation of “public decency standards.”

SERAP argues that the ban is arbitrary, illegal, and unconstitutional, and infringes on the rights to freedom of expression, access to information, and media freedom.

The organization is seeking an order to set aside the ban and restrain the NBC from preventing the airing of the song.

SERAP contends that the NBC’s directive is inconsistent with the requirements of legality, necessity, and proportionality, and has a chilling effect on freedom of expression.
