Nearly 200 households have been evacuated from Cape Town’s coastal areas after a wildfire erupted around the Table Mountain range on Friday, city officials said.

According to Jermaine Carelse, spokesperson for Cape Town’s Fire and Rescue Service, 198 households, including 48 frail care residents at Noordhoek Manor, were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Residents of Barnyard and Silwersteen also voluntarily left their homes amid concerns over their safety.

The wildfire, which broke out in the Tokai area, has scorched largely inaccessible sections of the mountainside, prompting urgent evacuations to safeguard hundreds of families.

At least 100 firefighters have been deployed to battle the blaze across five active fronts, with evacuation orders affecting areas such as Steenberg Estate, Zwaanswyk, and Noordhoek Manor.

As of Monday morning, no new flare-ups had been reported, Carelse said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities have confirmed that only one injury, involving a firefighter, has been recorded so far.

Officials continue to monitor the situation closely and have pledged to investigate the origins of the fire once it is fully contained.
