SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on Sunday that the company’s satellite system Starlink is now available in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The development comes after the Congolese government granted a license to Starlink last week, reversing an earlier ban.

The ban was initially imposed in March 2024 due to concerns that Starlink could be used by rebel groups, including the Rwandan-backed M23, which has seized territory in eastern Congo.

With Starlink’s availability, Congo joins over a dozen African countries where the satellite internet provider is live.

The service aims to improve connectivity in the war-torn country, where only around 30% of the population had access to the internet as of 2023.
