Kenyan Cardinal John Njue will not participate in the papal conclave to elect the next Pope due to health issues, the Catholic Church in Kenya has confirmed.

Despite being eligible to participate, Njue’s current health condition will prevent him from traveling to Rome for the conclave.

The 79-year-old cardinal had initially expressed confusion about not receiving an invitation, but the Archdiocese of Nairobi clarified that he was indeed invited but unable to attend due to his health.

Njue is one of only two cardinals under 80 who will not be voting, alongside Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares, also 79.

The conclave will feature 133 cardinal electors, requiring a two-thirds majority, or at least 89 votes, to elect the new Pope.
