South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has sparked controversy by calling 59 white South Africans who relocated to the United States “cowards,” asserting that they’ll return soon.
The group, comprising mostly Afrikaners, was granted refugee status by US President Donald Trump, who claimed they faced racial discrimination.
Ramaphosa disagrees, stating that those who want to leave are unhappy with efforts to address apartheid-era inequities. “As South Africans, we are resilient.
We don’t run away from our problems. We must stay here and solve our problems. When you run away, you are a coward, and that’s a real cowardly act,” Ramaphosa said.
The South African leader emphasized that his country is working to address its challenges, dismissing Trump’s assessment of the situation as “not true.”
Ramaphosa also mentioned that he will meet with Trump soon to discuss the issue, after Trump threatened to boycott the forthcoming G20 summit in South Africa unless the situation is resolved.
