The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been embroiled in a long-standing battle with former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, over allegations of N2.2 billion fraud.

Fayose, alongside his company Spotless Investment Limited, was arraigned on November-count charges bordering on fraud and money laundering offenses in October 2018.

Fayose’s legal team, led by Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN) and Olalekan Ojo (SAN), recently submitted a no-case submission before Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke, asserting that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case.

The EFCC had accused Fayose of benefiting from funds allegedly diverted by Senator Musiliu Obanikoro from Sylvan Mcnamara Ltd, a company contracted by the then National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki.

During the trial, the EFCC called 20 witnesses, including nine bank officials, before closing its case on February 28, 2025.

However, Fayose’s counsel argued that the prosecution’s witnesses and exhibits were based on “mere speculations” and highlighted several contradictions in the case.

Notably, Senator Obanikoro recanted key parts of his earlier statements, revealing that the funds delivered to Fayose were proceeds from fundraising and donations for the 2014 Ekiti State gubernatorial election.

The court has adjourned the ruling on the no-case submission to July 10, 2025, leaving Fayose’s fate hanging in the balance.
