At least 58 unidentified corpses were discovered in a hospital morgue refrigerator in Tripoli’s Abu Salim neighborhood, the Libyan interior ministry reported on Monday.

The hospital, previously under the control of the Stabilisation Support Apparatus (SSA) militia, had not reported the corpses to the authorities.

The SSA’s leader, Abdulghani Kikli, was killed in unconfirmed circumstances last week, leading to the militia’s defeat by factions aligned with Prime Minister Abdulhamid al-Dbeibah’s Government of National Unity (GNU).

An investigation is underway to establish the identities of the deceased, with 23 corpses examined so far and necessary legal procedures taken, including documenting data and collecting samples.

The discovery comes after nine unidentified corpses were found in another SSA-controlled hospital in the same neighborhood on Saturday.

The GNU has ordered the dismantling of armed groups, and a ceasefire remains in place after clashes killed at least eight civilians.

Libya has struggled with stability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that ousted Muammar Gaddafi.
