President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate activation of the National Emergency Response Centre in Niger State following the devastating flash floods that have claimed at least 115 lives in Mokwa Local Government Area.

The directive came in response to a briefing from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), which highlighted the urgent need to scale up humanitarian assistance and rescue operations for affected residents.

In a statement issued overnight, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of lives and widespread displacement caused by the torrential rains that struck the region between Wednesday and Thursday.

“I have received with deep concern the distressing reports of severe flooding in Mokwa… I extend my heartfelt condolences to the affected families and the good people of Niger State at this difficult time,” the President said.

According to reports by Agence France-Presse (AFP), quoting a NEMA spokesperson, the rains destroyed and submerged dozens of homes in the Mokwa area near the Niger River. The flooding swept away bodies, many of which were carried downstream, complicating recovery efforts and raising fears that the death toll could increase.

NEMA stressed the dangers of constructing buildings along waterways and the critical need to keep drainage and river channels clear to prevent future disasters.

In response, President Tinubu confirmed that all relevant federal agencies had been mobilized to assist the Niger State Government. Relief materials and temporary shelter are already being deployed to aid those displaced.

“I assure all those impacted that your government stands with you,” Tinubu said. “We will ensure a swift, coordinated, and compassionate response—one that prioritises lives, restores dignity, and accelerates recovery.”

He also called on Nigerians to keep the victims and affected communities in their prayers, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring that no one is left behind.

President Tinubu further directed security agencies to support ongoing emergency operations on the ground.
