Russia’s head coach, Valery Karpin, has praised the Super Eagles of Nigeria, describing them as a stronger and more sophisticated side than other African teams like Zambia and Kenya, following their intense 1-1 draw in an international friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium on Friday night.
A 27th-minute own goal from Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi and a 71st-minute equaliser from Gemk’s Forward, Tolu Arokodare, ended the first-ever encounter between the two National Teams.
The encounter, which attracted a record-breaking crowd, marked the first-ever senior meeting between Nigeria and Russia and brought an end to Russia’s impressive eight-match winning streak, which included a commanding 5-0 win over Zambia earlier in March 2025.
Speaking after the match, Karpin acknowledged the quality and depth of the Nigerian squad, noting that the Super Eagles presented a far greater challenge than previous African opponents.
“They [African teams] are all athletic and physically strong,” Karpin told the media. “But Cameroon and Nigeria are clearly on another level compared to Zambia and Kenya. Even the FIFA rankings confirm this. These teams are more exciting, more dangerous.”
Russia had previously beaten Cameroon 1-0 in October 2023 and played out a 2-2 draw with Kenya, results that had launched their long unbeaten run, until Nigeria halted the streak.
Despite the final scoreline, Karpin was satisfied with his team’s display against the three-time African champions. He pointed out that the Russians were more threatening in attack and that Nigeria didn’t pose as many problems in the final third.
“They didn’t create much danger for us,” Karpin said. “We made some mistakes like during the throw-in that led to the goal but otherwise, I can’t recall any big chances they created. Meanwhile, we had some good moments from Melehin and Barinov.”
The Super Eagles’ performance in Moscow added to their rising international profile, especially after Raphael Onyedika and Victor Boniface starred in a physical contest that tested both sides’ tactical discipline and endurance.
In addition to ending Russia’s unbeaten streak, Nigeria also broke a six-year stadium attendance record, underlining the global appeal of the West African football powerhouse.
As the Super Eagles gear up for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, the result and the respect shown by Karpin signal that Nigeria remains a force to reckon with on the global football stage.
