A person was killed in Nairobi, Kenya, during protests sparked by the death of 31-year-old blogger Albert Ojwang while in police custody.
Ojwang died on June 8, and an independent autopsy found that his wounds pointed to assault as the cause of death, contradicting the police’s initial claim of suicide.
The protests turned violent when unidentified motorcyclists attacked demonstrators, and police fired tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The motorcyclists were seen whipping protesters and members of the public, according to Amnesty International’s Kenya chapter.
President William Ruto admitted that Ojwang died “at the hands of the police,” calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable”.
Two senior officers and a CCTV technician have been arrested in connection with Ojwang’s death, and the deputy police chief has temporarily stepped aside pending the completion of the investigation.
Demonstrations erupted in Nairobi and Mombasa, with protesters shouting slogans and holding placards saying “Stop killing us” and “Ruto must stop killing us”.
