Human rights lawyer and lead counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Benue State due to the relentless and gruesome massacre of innocent civilians.

Ejiofor cited Section 305(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which empowers the President to declare a state of emergency where there is a breakdown of public order or imminent danger to life and property.

He criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia’s handling of the crisis, stating that the governor’s actions risk eroding the foundation of national security coordination.

The lawyer demanded that the Federal Government empower the Nigerian security apparatus to launch comprehensive operations to identify, isolate, and neutralize the foreign insurgents terrorizing peaceful communities.

The United Nations has acknowledged monitoring the situation, condemning the killing of innocent civilians, while Amnesty International has also decried the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the region.
