The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Fédération Algérienne de Football (FAF), the Government of Algeria, and the Algerian people following a tragic incident that occurred during MC Alger’s league title celebrations.

In a statement released on Sunday, June 22, 2025, CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe expressed profound sorrow over the loss of lives and injuries suffered by football fans during the match between MC Alger and Najem Magra, which had marked MC Alger’s coronation as league champions.
According to Algeria’s Ministry of Health, the celebrations turned tragic when three spectators lost their lives, and more than 70 others sustained injuries during the event.

“CAF is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and the injuries sustained by the football spectators during the football match between MC Alger and Najem Magra,” Dr. Motsepe stated.
“We express our deep condolences to the Fédération Algérienne de Football, the Algerian Government, His Excellency President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the people of Algeria on this sad and painful incident.”
He also offered prayers and well-wishes for those injured, saying: “We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery and pray to Allah to be with them, the families who lost their loved ones, and the people of Algeria.”

Dr. Motsepe confirmed that CAF is in ongoing communication with FAF President Walid Sadi and will continue to offer support and assistance during this difficult time.
The tragedy has cast a somber shadow over what was meant to be a jubilant occasion for one of Algeria’s most historic football clubs, serving as a reminder of the importance of crowd safety during major sporting events.
