The Supreme Court has adjourned indefinitely its judgment in the legal battle over the governorship of Edo State, throwing the state’s political atmosphere into uncertainty.

The adjournment follows a hearing of the appeal filed by Asue Ighodalo and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), who are challenging the election outcome.

Ighodalo’s counsel, Ken Mosia, SAN, urged the court to declare his client the rightful winner of the governorship election, arguing that he polled the majority of lawful votes.

However, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi, SAN, countered that the appeal lacks merit and should be dismissed.

The electoral body argued that Ighodalo and the PDP had initially declared the election invalid and unlawful due to non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, and therefore cannot now claim to be the winners of the same election.

The Supreme Court’s decision will determine the fate of the Edo State governorship and the future of the state’s politics.
