Liverpool and Portuguese forward, Diogo Jota has tragically passed away at the age of 28 following a fatal road accident in Spain.

The accident occurred on the A-52 motorway, specifically at kilometre 65 near the municipality of Palacios de Sanabria, in Zamora province, northwest Spain. The Liverpool player died when the vehicle he was traveling in alongside his brother Andre, 26, who is also a professional footballer, suffered a road exit that triggered a fire.

Jota, a prominent figure for both Liverpool FC and the Portuguese national team, was confirmed dead at the scene, according to a report by Spanish sports outlet MARCA on Thursday. The news has sent shockwaves through the global football community.

“Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota dies in a traffic accident in the province of Zamora,” MARCA wrote in a brief but solemn announcement.

Born in 1996, Jota had carved a reputation for his relentless work ethic, sharp goal-scoring instincts, and versatility across attacking roles. Since joining Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, he became a key part of Jürgen Klopp’s attacking setup, helping the Reds to domestic and European success.

His contributions to the Portuguese national team also stood out, with Jota playing a crucial role in several major tournaments.

As of press time, further details regarding the circumstances of the crash and funeral arrangements have not been released.
