Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa has shocked the nation by announcing that he will not seek re-election in the forthcoming parliamentary elections, effectively ending his tenure as prime minister.
Majaliwa, who has held the position since 2015, cited divine guidance and a desire to give others the opportunity to lead, stating, “It is time to give others the opportunity to unite and build on the development foundation we’ve established”.
This unexpected move comes just a week after Majaliwa expressed his intention to defend his legislative seat for a fourth time.
The 64-year-old leader has been a key figure in the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party and played a crucial role in ensuring a smooth transition after the death of President John Magufuli in 2021.
Majaliwa’s decision has sparked speculation about a potential power struggle within the ruling party, with analysts suggesting that President Samia Suluhu Hassan may be looking to consolidate her control over the CCM and shape her second-term leadership lineup. Majaliwa has pledged to continue serving as a senior CCM official and support Hassan’s presidential bid.
The country is set to hold parliamentary and presidential elections, with the CCM expected to retain power.
However, the main opposition party, Chadema, has been barred from participating fully due to its refusal to comply with a code of ethics, citing demands for electoral reforms.
