Prominent Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi is set to appear in court on charges of “facilitation of terrorist acts” related to last month’s deadly anti-government protests, which resulted in at least 19 deaths.

Mwangi’s arrest has sparked widespread condemnation, with human rights groups denouncing it as a move to suppress opposition voices.

Authorities seized phones, a laptop, and other materials from Mwangi’s home and office, but he has denied the accusations, saying “I am not a terrorist.” The protests, which drew attention to police brutality and government accountability, have led to over 100 deaths since June last year.

A coalition of 37 rights organizations has condemned Mwangi’s arrest, describing it as a “full-scale assault on Kenya’s democracy”.
