Ondo State Governor, Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has honoured Super Falcons defender Tosin Demehin with a cash gift of ₦30 million and a house at Sunshine Estate, Oba-Ile, for her outstanding performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

Demehin, who hails from Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, played a vital defensive role in Nigeria’s victorious campaign. The announcement was made during a civic reception held in Akure for Ondo indigenes who were part of the championship-winning Super Falcons squad.
“This is a proud moment for Ondo State,” Aiyedatiwa said. “Tosin Demehin has made us proud on the continental stage. As a token of our appreciation, the state government is awarding her ₦30 million and a house.”

In addition to Demehin, the governor also rewarded Mary Akinsola, the team’s media officer, and Mary Oduboku, the team’s secretary, with ₦15 million each in recognition of their contributions to Nigeria’s seventh WAFCON title.
The governor praised the trio as “brave daughters” of the state, hailing their dedication, discipline, and teamwork. “You have brought glory not just to the nation, but also to Ondo State,” he said, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.
Aiyedatiwa also pledged increased support for the state’s football teams, particularly Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure, with the aim of restoring the club’s top-flight status.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Henry Segun, assured the governor that with sustained support, Ondo sports would continue to thrive. The Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, Dele Sunday Ajayi, commended Aiyedatiwa for being the first governor to recognise and reward Super Falcons players and officials from the state.
In her response, a visibly moved Demehin thanked the governor and the people of Ondo State for the warm welcome and generous reward.
“Receiving this honour from my home state means the world to me,” she said. “As a former Sunshine Queens player, I’ve seen the potential in women’s football here. This support gives hope to many young girls like me.”
She also urged stakeholders to invest in the development of women’s football in the state and across Nigeria, stressing that building the future of the sport is a collective effort.
