John Utaka, a former Nigerian international footballer, has been named the new head coach of Montpellier HSC’s women’s team, replacing Frédéric Mendy.

Utaka, who will share coaching duties with Baptiste Merle under the guidance of sporting director Jean-Louis Saez, becomes the only African manager in France’s top-tier women’s league.

This appointment marks a significant milestone in Utaka’s coaching career, having earned his UEFA A Licence in 2022 and previously serving as assistant coach for Montpellier’s U-19 men’s team.

Utaka’s connection to Montpellier runs deep, having played a crucial role in the men’s team winning the 2011-2012 Ligue 1 title. He will also work with Nigerian international Ifeoma Onumonu, who joined the club earlier this year.

Montpellier’s women’s team currently sits fifth in Division 1 Féminine with 27 points after 19 matches, trailing third-placed Girondins Bordeaux by 11 points.

With his composed leadership and attacking philosophy, Utaka is expected to bring discipline, teamwork, and offensive flair to the team.

Montpellier fans are eager to see his impact in the crucial run-in to the season.

Utaka’s appointment is a notable achievement, reflecting his dedication to coaching and his potential to make a lasting impact in French football.
