The Companion, a national association of Muslim professionals and entrepreneurs, has called for a change in mindset among Nigerians and a renewed focus on youth-driven entrepreneurship to confront the country’s deepening socio-economic challenges.
The appeal was made in a communiqué issued at the close of the group’s three-day National Elective Conference, held from August 8 to 10 at Peace Hotel in Ilorin, Kwara State.
The gathering, which drew members from across the country, also featured traditional rulers including the Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya Alebiosu, and the Aala of Ilala, Oba Abdulfatai Oladega Talabi.
Addressing the theme “Thriving Amidst Adversity: Strategies for Survival in Nigeria’s Challenging Economy,” keynote speaker Dr. Sulayman Ibrahim urged citizens to reject corruption, embrace frugal living, and pursue sustainable ventures. He stressed that young Nigerians must be creative, diligent, and proactive rather than reacting passively to economic pressures.
In its resolutions, The Companion urged the federal government to boost infrastructure, enhance security, and create a business-friendly environment to attract investment and strengthen micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs). The group also called for inclusive economic policies that foster fairness and opportunity for all citizens.
The conference ratified a nine-member Board of Trustees for The Companion Zakat and Zadaqah Foundation, chaired by former National Amir Alhaji Thabit Wale Sonaike. It also granted operational autonomy to its youth wing, The Dawn, while pledging mentorship to prepare its members for future leadership roles.
A new National Executive Council was inaugurated, with Imam Nojeem Jimoh elected as National Amir and Prof. Tunde Musibau Akanni named Director of Public Affairs.
The association expressed gratitude to dignitaries, guests, and participants for their contributions to what it described as a successful 1447 AH (2025) National Elective Conference.
