Renowned Nigerian actor Segun Remi, widely known as Chief Kanran, has died at the age of 72.

The veteran actor, celebrated for his unique style, humor, and commanding performances in numerous stage plays and movies, passed away on Friday morning, August 15, 2025.

Chief Kanran was a household name in the Yoruba film industry, leaving behind a legacy of memorable roles in films and stage productions over several decades. The cause of his death is yet to be disclosed.

With a career spanning multiple decades, Chief Kanran had a profound impact on the Nigerian film industry. Born in 1953 in Keesi, Ogun State, Nigeria, he began acting professionally in 1975 and went on to study theatre arts at the University of Lagos and Obafemi Awolowo University.

His breakthrough role came when he acted in “Langbodo,” Nigeria’s drama entry to Festac ’77 at the National Arts Theatre Iganmu, Lagos ³.

Chief Kanran’s passing has sent shockwaves through the Nollywood community, with tributes pouring in for the veteran actor.

As the industry mourns the loss of this legendary figure, his contributions to Nigerian cinema will undoubtedly be remembered for generations to come.
