Omotoyossi etched his name into history as the first Beninese player to score at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). His defining moment came in the 2008 AFCON qualifiers when he singlehandedly demolished Togo with four goals in a 4–1 victory. That heroic performance not only secured a famous win but also elevated Benin’s status in African football.

He went on to finish as the joint-top scorer of the 2008 AFCON qualifiers, sharing the honour with African great Samuel Eto’o, a testament to his goal-scoring instincts and consistency.

At club level, Omotoyossi’s career spanned several continents. He rose to prominence in Sweden with Helsingborgs IF, where he won the Allsvenskan title and featured in the UEFA Champions League. He later played in France for FC Metz, as well as in South Africa, Syria, Libya, and Moldova, adapting his game and leaving an impression wherever he went.

Beyond his exploits on the pitch, Omotoyossi’s decision to represent Benin over his country of birth, Nigeria, highlighted his sense of loyalty and gratitude to the nation that embraced his talent. To many young Beninese footballers, he became living proof that they could rise to the highest levels of the sport.

He carried the hopes of a nation with humility and an infectious smile, becoming more than just a footballer—he was a national inspiration.

The Benin Football Federation is expected to issue an official statement soon. For now, the continent reflects on the life of a striker whose goals brought joy, unity, and pride.
