The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission to suspend the proposed pay rise for political office holders, including the president, vice president, governors, and lawmakers, citing economic challenges and a court judgment.

SERAP believes the commission’s decision to increase salaries is a gross misuse of its constitutional and statutory mandates, particularly when over 133 million Nigerians live in poverty and several state governments struggle to pay workers’ salaries.

The organization has given Tinubu a 7-day ultimatum to comply, warning that it will take legal action if ignored.

SERAP also referenced a June 2021 judgment by Justice Chuka Austine Obiozor, which directed the RMAFC to review downward the salaries and allowances of National Assembly members to reflect the nation’s economic realities.
