Prominent Kenyan human rights activist Boniface Mwangi has announced his candidacy for the presidency in the 2027 general election.

Mwangi, known for his role in anti-government protests, emphasized the need for leadership that prioritizes the welfare of ordinary Kenyans and transforms their aspirations into practical policies.

His campaign focuses on inclusivity, accountability, and unity, positioning him as an alternative voice in the upcoming polls. “Our leadership has failed us in numerous ways,” Mwangi said, criticizing the current system’s inefficiencies and corruption.

Mwangi’s decision to run comes after years of speaking out against human rights violations in Kenya and abroad.

Despite previously running unsuccessfully for parliament in 2017 on an anti-corruption platform, he remains determined to bring change.

Other potential candidates vying for the presidency include Senator Okiya Omtatah, former Chief Justice David Maraga, and incumbent President William Ruto, who intends to seek re-election.

The 2027 election will be a crucial test of whether popular support for protests can translate into electoral success.

Mwangi’s candidacy will need to be cleared by the Independent Electoral Boundaries Commission, which qualifies all candidates.

With several other candidates already in the mix, the race for Kenya’s presidency is shaping up to be a competitive one.
