Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has ended the tenure of Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui and appointed Industry Minister Sifi Ghrieb as acting head of the government, according to state media reports.

This development comes after Larbaoui submitted his cabinet’s resignation, which Tebboune has yet to formally accept, citing the need to focus on pressing matters requiring the expertise of current ministers.

In November 2023, Tebboune had appointed Larbaoui as prime minister, replacing Aimene Benabderrahmane, with Larbaoui serving as director of the presidential cabinet before his appointment.

The reason behind Larbaoui’s departure hasn’t been officially disclosed. Tebboune, who secured a second term in office with 84.3% of the vote, has faced challenges in addressing domestic issues, including economic concerns and human rights abuses.

As president, Tebboune has maintained a strong stance on foreign policy, particularly regarding Palestine and Western Sahara, and has sought to bolster Algeria’s diplomatic presence globally. His administration has continued subsidies on basic goods and introduced unemployment benefits for young people.

However, critics argue that Tebboune needs to adopt a new governance approach, enhancing living conditions and increasing civil liberties to address the country’s internal challenges.
