A police inspector attached to the Mobile Police Unit (MOPOL) has allegedly shot and killed a soldier in Futuk, Bauchi State, during an altercation over a truck escort.
The incident occurred when troops stationed at a checkpoint attempted to stop the truck, suspected of carrying illegally mined mineral resources from a Chinese mining company.
The driver refused to comply, prompting the soldiers to pursue and intercept the vehicle, which led to a confrontation between the security personnel.
The police officer involved is currently in custody, and an investigation has commenced to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Major Atang Hallet Solomon, confirmed the incident and stated that a joint investigation is underway to determine the causes of the incident.
The truck’s content and ownership are yet to be confirmed, and the driver has fled the scene.
The police commissioner is scheduled to visit the scene to assess the situation and provide further details.
