Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has removed Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo from office with immediate effect, following a committee’s recommendation based on grounds of “stated misbehaviour”.

The decision was announced by the Presidency after a petition was filed by a Ghanaian citizen, prompting an investigation into Torkornoo’s conduct.

The committee, constituted under Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution, concluded that grounds of “stated misbehaviour” had been established against the Chief Justice, and President Mahama acted on the committee’s recommendation to effect Torkornoo’s removal.

Torkornoo, who became Chief Justice in June 2023, served barely two years in office before her removal, becoming the first sitting Chief Justice in Ghana’s Fourth Republic to be removed through a constitutional impeachment process.
