A landslide in the remote Marra Mountains in western Sudan has killed at least 370 people, according to a UN official.
Antoine Gérard, the UN’s deputy humanitarian coordinator for Sudan, said the exact death toll is hard to assess due to the area’s inaccessibility.
The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, the armed group controlling the affected area, reported that 1,000 people may have died, and the village of Tarasin was “levelled” after days of heavy rain triggered the landslide on Sunday, leaving just one survivor.
The area is difficult to reach, and bringing in aid quickly will be challenging due to the rainy season and lack of helicopters.
Many residents from North Darfur state had sought refuge in the Marra Mountains region after war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) forced them from their homes.
The civil war, which broke out in April 2023, has plunged the country into famine and led to accusations of genocide in the western Darfur region, with estimates suggesting up to 150,000 people have been killed and 12 million displaced.
