A liquid substance suspected to be diesel has been discovered in a well at Omikunle, Yemetu area of Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident was reported to the Yemetu Police Division on Saturday, September 6, around 6:50 p.m. A team led by the Divisional Police Officer immediately moved to the scene and found the well filled with the substance.
Residents had gathered with containers to scoop the liquid before officers secured the area with armed personnel and local neighborhood watch members.
The Oyo State Ministry of Environment has been called in to assist with the safe handling and disposal of the substance.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the contamination may have come from a leakage in a nearby underground storage tank.
The police have assured the public that the situation is under control and investigations are ongoing to determine the source of the leak.
